Background informationThe rapid development in the Mekong River region has placed a strong pressure on the Mekong Basin’s water and related resources. In line with the 1995 Mekong Agreement, the Member Countries (MCs) have come together to work for sustainable development of the Mekong River Basin and its resources in order to achieve the basin Vision of an economically prosperous, socially just and environmentally sound Mekong River Basin. Over the past 23 years, the MRC has made several interventions and implemented various frameworks and guidance to create an avenue for an active involvement from the MCs when it comes to water and related resources development and management in the Basin.
