Integrated Water Resources Management-based Basin Development Strategy 2016-2020 for the Lower Mekong Basin
The Basin Development Strategy (BDS) 2016-2020 aims to address water management and development issues through increasing regional dialogue and cooperation, strengthening basin-wide procedures and guidelines, improving water related monitoring and information management, and enhancing national plans and projects.
The Strategic Plan (SP) 2016-2020 sets out how for the period 2016-2020 the MRC will deliver the role established by the 1995 Mekong Agreement: to promote and coordinate sustainable development and management of the Mekong’s water and related natural resources.
2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the Mekong Agreement on Cooperation for the Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin. The report illustrates how the MRC has been helping its Member Countries co-manage and develop their shared water resources.
The Report presents achievements made under the MRC Strategic Plan 2011-2015, including in the areas of climate change, navigation, regional cooperation, organisational reform and the implementation of the MRC Procedures.
The Report discusses decentralisation of the MRC’s Core River Basin Management Functions, the development and implementation of the Basin Development Plan and achievements made under the MRC programmes.
The plan acts as the guiding document for the MRC and its Member Countries on the inland waterway safety and environmental protection. It consists of national and cross-border projects serving as a basis to reduce the risks of accidents, spillages and pollution and enhance emergency responses.
