Persistent and intensified rainfall across the central and upper regions of the Lower Mekong Basin, particularly in northern Thailand and Lao PDR, has caused a significant rise in water levels at critical monitoring stations along mainstream cities over the past two weeks. The water level at Nong Khai station in Thailand has reached flood level today, with similar surges observed at Chiang Khan and Nakhon Phanom in Thailand, as well as in Vientiane and Paksane in Lao PDR.

Vientiane, Lao PDR, 29 July 2024 – The Mekong River Commission (MRC) is pleased to welcome the Republic of Korea (ROK) as its newest Development Partner. In a significant boost to regional cooperation and sustainable development, the ROK has committed a grant of USD 1,000,000 to the MRC for the year 2024, and the possibility of providing additional contributions in the following years. This contribution is aimed at supporting the implementation of the Basin Development Strategy 2021-2030 for the Mekong River Basin and the MRC Strategic Plan 2021-2025.

The forum provided crucial updates on the latest developments concerning the Mekong River.

In a historic Joint Survey coordinated by the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Water Center and the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat, experts from six riparian countries – Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Myanmar, and China – embarked on their inaugural visit to the source of the Lancang-Mekong River. This event, from 14 to 20 July 2024, marked a significant step in entire-basin water management and cooperation.

In his second State of the Mekong Address, the top executive of the Mekong River Commission today described how – despite meaningful progress to better protect Southeast Asia’s largest river – it faces “alarming” trends in five critical areas: water flow regime, nourishing sediment, salinity intrusion, plastics pollution, and climate change-driven flood and drought.

Vientiane, Lao PDR, 30 April 2024 — Today, the Secretariats of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Mekong River Commission have launched a technology competition that will challenge university students from the 10 ASEAN countries to showcase their innovation and problem-solving skills to tackle one of the region’s pressing issues: flash floods.

Rabat, Morocco, 29 December 2022 – Morocco has bolstered its status as the first Arab and African partner of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) by agreeing to deepen cooperation in various water and energy-related fields – including establishing an Educational Visitor Centre at the MRC Headquarters in Lao PDR.
