Jakarta, Indonesia, 22 May 2024 — The Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat and the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) have agreed to deepen their engagement that will bridge the gap between disaster monitoring and response across Southeast Asia.

In his second State of the Mekong Address, the top executive of the Mekong River Commission today described how – despite meaningful progress to better protect Southeast Asia’s largest river – it faces “alarming” trends in five critical areas: water flow regime, nourishing sediment, salinity intrusion, plastics pollution, and climate change-driven flood and drought.

The CEO of the Mekong River Commission (MRC), Dr Anoulak Kittikhoun, welcomed Mr. Kenichi Kobayashi, the Japanese Ambassador to Laos, to visit the MRC Regional Flood and Drought Management Centre in Phnom Penh on 23 April 2024. The ambassador's visit highlighted the ongoing cooperation between Japan and the MRC in improving flood and drought forecasting across the Mekong region.

On the afternoon of 3 April 2024, a truck carrying 30 tons of sulfuric acid encountered an accident in Ban Phou Xang Kham village in Luang Prabang, resulting in a significant spill in the canal nearby. The incident occurred when the truck transporting sulfuric acid toppled over, leading to the leakage of approximately 50% of its contents. The incident site is located approximately 300 meters from the Nam Khan River and about 6 kilometers from the confluence of the Mekong River.

The Republic of Indonesia and the Mekong River Commission (MRC) have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, initiating their collaboration on sustainable development, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and water resource management.

Sixteen delegates from the United States recently took part in the 11th Mekong – Mississippi Sister Rivers Partnership Exchange, held from 22 to 26 January 2024, in Thailand and Vietnam. The purpose of the visit was to foster the exchange of experiences between the Mississippi River Commission and the Mekong River Commission, contributing to water security and prosperity in both river basins. Joining the Mississippi River Commission was the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as the technical arm of the Commission, as well as the US Department of State, and the USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia. Representatives from the Cambodian and Lao National Mekong Committees also joined the exchange.

The United Kingdom has provided £150,000 (approx. USD 190,000) in funding to the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to boost the intergovernmental organization’s ability to communicate flood and drought information to communities across the four Lower Mekong Basin nations.
