Viet Nam’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Do Duc Duy has called for enhanced efforts in disaster preparedness, renewable energy research, and deeper regional cooperation during his first official visit to the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat Headquarters in Vientiane today. His visit, coinciding with the ASEAN Summits in Lao PDR, underscores Viet Nam’s continued commitment to Mekong cooperation and the sustainable management of the river’s resources.

Today, 250 participants, including ministerial delegations and high-ranking officials from ten ASEAN member states, along with representatives and technical experts from dialogue and development partners, gathered in Vientiane, Lao PDR for the 2nd ASEAN-MRC Water Security Dialogue. Under the theme 'Sustainable Investment for a Connected, Resilient, and Water-Secure Southeast Asia,' the dialogue reflected the shared commitment to addressing critical water security challenges across the Mekong and ASEAN regions.

Lao PDR, as the Chair of ASEAN 2024, will host the 2nd ASEAN-MRC Water Security Dialogue on 18 September 2024, at Souphattra Hotel in Vientiane, with support of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat and the ASEAN Secretariat.

Persistent and intensified rainfall across the central and upper regions of the Lower Mekong Basin, particularly in northern Thailand and Lao PDR, has caused a significant rise in water levels at critical monitoring stations along mainstream cities over the past two weeks. The water level at Nong Khai station in Thailand has reached flood level today, with similar surges observed at Chiang Khan and Nakhon Phanom in Thailand, as well as in Vientiane and Paksane in Lao PDR.

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) is pleased to welcome the Republic of Korea (ROK) as its newest Development Partner. In a significant boost to regional cooperation and sustainable development, the ROK has committed a grant of USD 1,000,000 to the MRC for the year 2024, and the possibility of providing additional contributions in the following years. This contribution is aimed at supporting the implementation of the Basin Development Strategy 2021-2030 for the Mekong River Basin and the MRC Strategic Plan 2021-2025.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has signed a Grant Agreement with the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to provide up to USD 5 million for the new Mekong Basin Partnership. The signing ceremony, held at the MRC Secretariat, demonstrates the continuous support of the U.S. to strengthen transboundary coordination and management of water and related resources, contributing to the achievement of the MRC’s Basin Development Strategy.

In a historic Joint Survey coordinated by the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Water Center and the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat, experts from six riparian countries – Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Myanmar, and China – embarked on their inaugural visit to the source of the Lancang-Mekong River. This event, from 14 to 20 July 2024, marked a significant step in entire-basin water management and cooperation.
