Every year on 5 April, the countries of the Mekong come together to celebrate Mekong Day, a moment that marks the signing of the 1995 Mekong Agreement and the shared commitment to manage the river together.

This year, the celebration highlights a message that matters to all of us: “Together, protect water quality for shared prosperity.” Clean water is not just an environmental issue. It is about health, food security, economic opportunity, and the future of communities along the river.

Across the region, activities will bring people closer to the river, from youth-led initiatives to public events that showcase innovation and local solutions. Young people, in particular, are stepping forward with ideas and energy, showing that the future of the Mekong is a shared responsibility.
