The Mekong River Commission (MRC) continues to step up its regional response to arsenic contamination detected in the upper reaches of the Mekong River, near its confluences with the Kok and Ruak Rivers in northern Thailand, as recent monitoring results show fluctuating levels of arsenic contamination.

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat is working closely with national agencies from Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Thailand, to address concerns over water quality in the Kok River and parts of the Mekong River. A recent water quality assessment conducted by the Secretariat revealed that four out of five sampling sites had arsenic concentrations above the standard limit of 0.01 mg/L.

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) and the Government of Japan signed an agreement to support the implementation of the Project for Strengthening Flood and Drought Risk Management in the Lower Mekong Basin. The agreement marks a significant step in advancing regional efforts to mitigate climate-related disasters and enhance water resource management across Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam.
