Data & Information
Data and information are key to sustainable water resources management. The MRC has a long history of data collection and analysis about the heath and conditions of the Mekong River, with some data over 100 years. The interactive dashboards assemble and visualise more than 10,000 datasets covering historic and current assessment covering hydrology, sediment, water quality, fisheries, ecological health, climate change, and flood and drought.

MRCS CEO Busadee Santipitaks paid a courtesy visit on H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, to discuss strategic cooperation on regional water security, climate resilience, and transboundary coordination across the Mekong Basin.
As climate risks intensify throughout the region, the discussion emphasized the need for stronger water diplomacy, real time coordination, and collective action to safeguard communities, ecosystems, and long term regional stability.
Both sides agreed that the Mekong’s future and prosperity depends on mutual trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility among regional partners in the Mekong River Basin. H.E. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister commended the work of the MRC and supported coordinated efforts to promote synergies among the Mekong related frameworks.

The MRC Secretariat CEO Busadee Santipitaks and Senior Management, welcomed to the MRC Secretariat Headquarters, a delegation from the European Parliament, led by Mr. Wouter BEKE (EPP, Belgium), Chair of the Delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr. Inese Vaidere (EPP, Latvia), Mr. Daniel Freund (Greens, Germany), and Mr. Urmas Paet (Renew, Estonia). The delegation was accompanied by H.E. Mr. Mark Gallagher, EU Ambassador to the Lao PDR and representatives of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR.
The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on the successes and challenges of transboundary water cooperation in the Mekong region. Discussions also touched upon sustainable water resources management and climate resilience, hydropower development and its implications for communities and ecosystems, as well as efforts of the MRC Secretariat to address challenges relating to fisheries management, plastic pollution as well as water quality concerns in the Mekong. The delegation also had the opportunity to visit the MRC Education and Visitor Center.
The European Union and the Mekong River Commission continue to maintain dialogue and a trusted partnership based on shared priorities on sustainable water resources management, climate resilience, and inclusive regional cooperation across the Mekong River Basin.

✨On 22 May 2026, MRCS CEO Busadee Santipitaks and Senior Team Members welcomed Ms. Carol Holmes, Assistant Secretary of Vietnam and Mekong Strategy Branch, Southeast Asia Regional and Mainland Division, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia 🇦🇺, to the MRCS Headquarters.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on MRC priorities in the Strategic Plan 2026-2030,and discussed how Australia and MRC can further collaborate towards the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan.
The meeting further highlighted the importance and role of MRC in contributing towards the ASEAN regional integration, particularly the water-energy nexus and regional cooperation on sustainable water resources management in the Mekong Basin. Key challenges facing the MRC were discussed, including the need for continued support to strengthen data monitoring, enhancing forecasting capabilities, sharing of expertise on water quality monitoring, and advanced technologies. Both sides also exchanged views on the potential application of AI and other innovative tools to further enhance monitoring and data management in the future.
As part of the visit, Assistant Secretary presented a Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) model to the MRC Education and Visitor Centre. Through the Mekong-Australia Partnership, the Australian National University has supported the MRC and its Member Countries in examining opportunities for solar, wind, and PHES systems to help provide affordable and reliable energy while also contributing to enhanced water management and promoting renewable energy across the Mekong Basin. ♻️🌏
