2022 Lower Mekong Water Quality Monitoring Report

The 2022 Water Quality Report for the Mekong River and its tributaries shows that water quality for human health protection was rated as “excellent” or “good” at 46 out of 48 stations, with two stations at “moderate” quality. For aquatic life, 26 stations had “high quality,” 19 had “good,” and three had “moderate” quality. Certain parameters, such as electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen, occasionally exceeded threshold values, although saltwater intrusion in the Vietnam Mekong Delta was less severe than in previous years.

2021 Lower Mekong Water Quality Monitoring Report

The 2021 Water Quality Report assesses the status and variations in water quality at 48 monitoring stations along the Mekong River and its tributaries. It found “excellent” or “good” quality for human health protection at 44 stations and “moderate” quality at four. For aquatic life protection, 27 stations had “high quality,” 17 had “good,” and four had “moderate.” Some parameters, such as electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen, occasionally exceeded guideline thresholds, with saltwater intrusion at My Tho station causing high electrical conductivity during the dry season, though levels were lower than in 2020.

2020 Lower Mekong Water Quality Monitoring Report

In 2020, water quality for human health protection was rated as “excellent” at 25 stations, “good” at 22, and “moderate” at one, while aquatic life protection saw “high quality” at 26 stations, “good” at 17, “moderate” at four, and “poor” at one. Parameters like electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and biochemical oxygen demand occasionally surpassed threshold values, with saltwater intrusion at the My Tho station contributing to elevated electrical conductivity during the dry season.

Investment Options and Associated Measures to Optimize Fisheries Production Under Changed River Conditions

This report assesses the status and trends in capture fisheries in the Lower Mekong Basin and needs for investment in their sustainability in the face of a changing river environment. It consolidates national reviews from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam into a regional overview highlighting key issues, proposed solutions, and investment needs aligned with existing national and regional fisheries management policies. Three potential small regional projects are identified with the aim to contribute to upcoming projects. These projects focus on improved national assessments of fisheries and incorporation of fisheries information into policy and planning; co-management of fisheries and fish habitats; and integrating the values of fisheries into climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Analysis of extreme weather events and climate variability in the Lower Mekong Basin

The Government of Japan, through its ODA, supported the MRC from 2021 to 2024 to strengthen the MRC RFDMC institutional and technical capacity under the project entitled “Flood and Drought Management in the Mekong” that focuses on enhancing flood and drought monitoring, forecasting systems, and improving the dissemination of warnings and alerts. This report, one of the products of the project, addresses extreme weather events like heatwaves, cyclones, heavy rainfall, and droughts, which frequently result in economic losses, fatalities, and environmental damage in the LMB. It highlights the need to understand short-term weather conditions and long-term climate changes for more accurate forecasting. In-depth studies of historical weather and climate data could contribute to better planning, adaptation, and the improvement of forecasting models, which are essential for managing future weather risks at both national and regional levels.

Basin Development Strategy 2021-2030 and MRC Strategic Plan 2021-2025

This Basin Development Strategy, in Part 1, sets out how water and related resources of the Mekong River Basin should be utilised, managed and conserved over the next 10 years from the perspectives of the Lower Mekong River Basin countries. Its main purpose is to guide all actors involved in Mekong water-related issues towards achieving improvements in the environmental, social and economic state of the Mekong River Basin.

Including in Part 2 of the strategy is the MRC Strategic Plan for 2021–2025, which is a unified corporate plan that is fully integrated with the BDS 2021–2030. The Strategic Plan sets out how the MRC will contribute to the implementation of the BDS and to strengthen the organisation over the next five years.
