📌On 23 February, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat welcomed geography students and professors from the University of Muenster and the University of Freiburg, Germany, to its headquarters in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
The discussion highlighted the MRC’s role as a platform for water diplomacy, its efforts to promote sustainable hydropower development, and how the MRC addresses gender, vulnerability, and community livelihoods across the Lower Mekong Basin. The visit also provided an opportunity for the students to learn more about the strong cooperation between the MRC and Germany as a long-standing Development Partner, particularly in advancing transboundary water cooperation in the region.
As a regional knowledge hub on water cooperation and sustainable river basin management, the MRC looks forward to continuing to engage with universities and research communities—both within the Mekong region and beyond—to share knowledge, exchange experiences, and inspire future collaboration.💧🤝

The students were keen to learn more about the MRC’s role in regional cooperation, sustainable development and management of water resources in the Lower Mekong Basin.
During the visit, the students exchanged views with MRC experts on MRC’s key priorities according to the Strategic Plan 2026-2030, as well as major challenges facing water governance in the basin. Participants also learnt about the MRC’s collaboration with other Mekong-related frameworks and institutions, and the organization's broader engagement with development partners as well as other global and regional partners.
Such academic visits provide opportunities for dialogue on policy, research, and practice. The MRC looks forward to continuing engagements with academic institutions and future policy leaders from across the region and beyond. 🌏
