Promote and coordinate sustainable management and development of water and related resources for the mutual benefits of the lower Mekong countries and the people’s well-being.

The MRC supports a basin-wide planning process based on principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). We provide a wide array of advisory and technical assistance to help the lower Mekong countries promote sustainability in major areas of development..

Our Functions

The MRC Functions are designed to help the lower Mekong countries build consensus around solutions that ensure a sustainable future for the Mekong and its people through basin monitoring, assessment, data and information sharing, and dialogue and cooperation.

Data & Information

Data and information are key to sustainable water resources management. The MRC has a long history of data collection and analysis about the heath and conditions of the Mekong River, with some data over 100 years. The interactive dashboards assemble and visualise more than 10,000 datasets covering historic and current assessment covering hydrology, sediment, water quality, fisheries, ecological health, climate change, and flood and drought.

Moderate dry conditions continue to be forecast, including:
🇱🇦 Lao PDR: Vientiane, Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, Savannakhet, and Salavan
🇹🇭 Thailand: Bueng Kan, Buri Ram, Nakhon Phanom, Maha Sarakham, Mukdahan, Nong Khai, Roi Et, Surin, Si Sa Ket, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Yasothon
🇰🇭 Cambodia: Battambang, Oddar Meanchey, and Siem Reap

💧𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀:
⬆️ Water levels from Chiang Saen to Kampong Cham are forecast to slightly increase by around 0.1 to 0.5m.
⬇️From Phnom Penh (Bassac) to the downstream areas, water levels are expected to decrease slightly by about 0.1m.
✅Water levels are not expected to cause any impact on the daily activities of people living along the mainstream this week.

The Planning Division Coordination Meeting between the MRC Secretariat and the National Mekong Committee Secretariats was held in Vang Vieng on 6 March 2026.

The meeting aimed to review the lessons learnt and challenges in implementing the Planning Division’s activities in 2025 under the 2025–2026 Multi-year Workplan. The meeting also discussed the detailed implementation plan for 2026, along with other key issues under the Planning Division’s responsibilities, to ensure the effective delivery of its activities.

👥 A Regional Consultation Meeting was held in Ho Chi Minh City on 5 March 2026 to discuss the implementation plan and arrangements for the project “Preliminary Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination Status in the Lower Mekong River Basin.” Participants include representatives from the National Mekong Committee Secretariats of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam, as well as representatives from relevant national line agencies and the MRC Secretariat.

During the meeting, participants reviewed and further refined the project activities, including reaching consensus on the selection of sampling locations, the methodologies for heavy metal sampling and analysis, and the overall implementation plan and arrangements for carrying out the project. The project, supported by the United Kingdom, aims to provide updated information to support regional understanding of water quality conditions in the Lower Mekong River Basin. The project is scheduled to be implemented from March to June 2026. 💧
