MRC Secretariat affirms Mekong basin size, length

Vientiane, Lao PDR, 18 December 2018 – Today, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat has found that the catchment area of the entire Mekong River basin is 810,000 square kilometers (km2) with a total length of 4,763 kilometers. Previously, the MRC documents used 795,000 km2 for the basin size and 4,350 km for the length.

Appreciation statements to CEO Pham Tuan Phan

At the 25th Meeting of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Council on 28 November 2018 in Ha Long City of Viet Nam, Cambodia and Lao PDR, in their statement, clearly spelled out their appreciation to CEO Pham Tuan Phan. The MRC Development Partners as well as China shared their appreciation, too. This is also reflected in the initial observations of the mid-term operational and strategic review report.

Existing dams on the Mekong are not the root cause of fish decline, lower water levels in Tonle Sap

Background informationThe rapid development in the Mekong River region has placed a strong pressure on the Mekong Basin’s water and related resources. In line with the 1995 Mekong Agreement, the Member Countries (MCs) have come together to work for sustainable development of the Mekong River Basin and its resources in order to achieve the basin Vision of an economically prosperous, socially just and environmentally sound Mekong River Basin. Over the past 23 years, the MRC has made several interventions and implemented various frameworks and guidance to create an avenue for an active involvement from the MCs when it comes to water and related resources development and management in the Basin.

Viet Nam shares views on more effective implementation of the 1995 Mekong Agreement and Council Study

In line with the Siem Reap Declaration of the 3rd MRC Summit, Vietnam National Mekong Committee (VNMC) shared with the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS) their thoughts on how to strengthen the implementation of the Mekong Agreement 1995 and effectively disseminate results of the Council Study: The study on the sustainable management and development of the Mekong River, including impacts of mainstream hydropower in a workshop in Vientiane, Lao PDR on 9 August 2018.

Rhone Exchange Visit Provides MRC with A Fresher and Comprehensive Approach in Whole-of-basin Sustainable Development and Management

Vientiane, Lao PDR, 4 July 2018 – In their efforts to better understand various approaches in managing and operating multi-purpose dams that could be adapted and applied regionally, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Council Members, Joint Committee Members and Secretariat senior staffers conducted an exchange visit to the Rhone river basin and the Compagnie National du Rhône (CNR), the French public company responsible for the development and management of the River Rhone in France.
