Data & Information
Data and information are key to sustainable water resources management. The MRC has a long history of data collection and analysis about the heath and conditions of the Mekong River, with some data over 100 years. The interactive dashboards assemble and visualise more than 10,000 datasets covering historic and current assessment covering hydrology, sediment, water quality, fisheries, ecological health, climate change, and flood and drought.

Concerns over elevated arsenic concentrations detected at some locations in the upper reaches of the Mekong River system in early 2025 highlighted the need for a coordinated regional assessment of heavy metal contamination across the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMB). With financial support from the Government of the United Kingdom through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the MRC Secretariat implemented the preliminary assessment from March to August 2026. Two rounds of sampling were conducted in March and April 2026, followed by laboratory analysis of the collected water samples.
The findings were compiled into a preliminary assessment report, which was shared with the MRC Member Countries for review and comments through national consultation meetings held in July 2026. The feedback received from the Member Countries was subsequently incorporated into the revised report.
During the 57th EGEM Meeting, the revised report was presented for further discussion and finalisation. The meeting also provided an opportunity for the Member Countries to discuss proposed follow-up actions and future directions for strengthening heavy metal monitoring and assessment in the LMB beyond the UK-supported assessment.
The assessment provides an initial regional snapshot of the status and distribution of selected heavy metals based on sampling conducted in March and April 2026. It was not intended to provide a long-term assessment of temporal trends, as sampling was limited to two dry-season rounds.
While the assessment was limited to two sampling rounds during the dry season, reflecting the implementation timeframe of the UK-supported project, the results provide an important baseline for strengthening future monitoring, assessment, and water quality management in the Mekong River Basin.
The findings will also help inform future efforts toward developing a more systematic and long-term approach to heavy metal monitoring under the MRC Core River Monitoring Network. 📊✓

The Regional Workshop on Social Impact Monitoring and Vulnerability Assessment (SIMVA) Data Analysis, Report Writing and Database was held on 26 August 2026 in Vang Vieng, bringing together representatives from the National Mekong Committees of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam, national line agencies, national and regional experts on SIMVA, the MRC Secretariat experts and international experts from the GIZ Laos and Australian Water Partnership
The workshop focused on sharing knowledge and experiences on SIMVA field surveys, data collection, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), data processing and analysis, as well as preparing draft national and regional SIMVA reports. Participants also discussed next steps for the development of SIMVA Database by integrating previous and updated SIMVA data from 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2026, with technical support from GIZ.
The workshop strengthened collaboration and enhanced data collection among Member Countries and partners, supporting the effective use of SIMVA data to better understand social impacts and vulnerabilities, including gender-disaggregated data across the Lower Mekong Basin.
