Our Functions

The MRC Functions are designed to help the lower Mekong countries build consensus around solutions that ensure a sustainable future for the Mekong and its people through basin monitoring, assessment, data and information sharing, and dialogue and cooperation.

Data & Information

Data and information are key to sustainable water resources management. The MRC has a long history of data collection and analysis about the heath and conditions of the Mekong River, with some data over 100 years. The interactive dashboards assemble and visualise more than 10,000 datasets covering historic and current assessment covering hydrology, sediment, water quality, fisheries, ecological health, climate change, and flood and drought.

🌧️𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁:
Rainfall is expected to decrease compared to last week.
Localized heavy rainfall possible in northeastern Thailand 🇹🇭, northern and central Lao PDR 🇱🇦, and the 3S Basin 🇰🇭 🇱🇦 🇻🇳.

💧𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀:
⬇️Water levels at most stations are expected to decrease by around 0.1 to 0.5 metres.
⬆️Water levels at Chiang Saen and Luang Prabang are forecast to increase by around 0.2 to 1.3 metres.
✅No stations are expected to reach alarm or flood levels.

👥The Regional Working Session on the Testing of the Web-based Alternative Mekong Flow Framework Dashboards was held on 17 June 2026 in Hanoi, bringing together technical experts from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Viet Nam, and the MRC Secretariat.

The session provided updates on the development progress of the Dashboards and offered participants an opportunity to test the functionality of each dashboard component. It also served as an initial platform for knowledge transfer, supporting future application and operation of the Dashboards at the national level.

Participants exchanged feedback, identified areas for improvement, and agreed on the next steps for further testing, refinement, and capacity-building activities. These efforts will help enhance the effective use of the Dashboards across the Lower Mekong Basin, strengthening river monitoring and supporting the implementation of the Procedures for the Maintenance of Flows on the Mainstream (PMFM). 🖥️🌊

👥 Experts from the National Mekong Committee Secretariats of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam, relevant national line agencies, and the MRC Secretariat gathered in Vang Vieng on 16 June 2026 for the 55th Expert Group on Environmental Management Meeting on the Finalization of the Implementation Plan of the Project for Strengthening Water Quality Management in the Lower Mekong Basin. The meeting aimed to present the revised activities and implementation plan for the Japan-funded project, incorporating feedback received from Member Countries during national consultations. Participants were also briefed on the financial procedures and arrangements for project implementation in accordance with MRC guidelines and manuals.

During the meeting, Member Countries reached a consensus on the detailed activities and implementation plan of the Japan 🇯🇵 -funded project. This marks an important milestone towards its implementation across the Lower Mekong Basin over the period from June 2026 to December 2028.
