German Government commits to give €3m technical cooperation support for MRC watershed management phase III

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) today signed a Euro 3 million (US$4.43 million) commitment over a two and half year period (December 2008-May 2011) for technical cooperation through GTZ to support the work of the Mekong River Commission (MRC).

MRC 'of great value' to regional development

The role of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) in water resource development across the Lower Mekong Basin was reiterated at the opening of the 15th Meeting of the MRC Council in Vientiane today. Council Chair for 2008-2009, Mme Khempeng Pholsena, also a Minister and Head of the Lao Water Resources and Environment Administration, said the Commission is held in 'high esteem as a reliable partner in sustainable development and as a valuable mechanism for cooperation in the Basin'.

Agreement on provision of hydrological information renewed by China and MRC

China and the countries of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) have arranged to build on their existing relations by renewing an agreement to share data on flood season water flows in the Lancang-Mekong River. The agreement on provision of hydrological information was signed in the Lao capital of Vientiane on 29 August 2008 by the Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China and the MRC. The signing marked the end of the Thirteenth Dialogue Meeting between the MRC and its Dialogue Partners, China and Myanmar.

MRC-China Cooperation Extended at Regional Mekong Meeting

Increased regional cooperation on water resources was the general theme of discussion as the four Member States of the Mekong River Commission (MRC), Cambodia, the Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam, today met with representatives from the two countries upstream on the Mekong, the People’s Republic of China and Myanmar, at the13th MRC Dialogue Meeting in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The meeting was to culminate in the signing of an extension to an agreement between the MRC and China, whereby China shares hydrological data from two water analysis stations on the Lancang-Mekong River in the Chinese province of Yunnan.

Floods and New Initiatives on MRC Agenda

Recent flooding and accelerating infrastructure development on the Mekong River were high on the agenda of discussions between the Member States of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) in Vientiane today. New initiatives, including the upcoming Regional Multi-Stakeholder Consultation of the MRC Hydropower Programme, Environmental Considerations for Sustainable Hydropower Development, and a new Drought Management Programme, were also deliberated at the 27th Meeting of the MRC Joint Committee.

Lower Mekong Basin Flood Update

Although water levels along the Mekong River above Phnom Penh have continued to decline since their peak so far in 2008, around August 17, when loss of life and damage to property were recorded in the Lao PDR and Thailand, many parts of the Lower Mekong Basin remain at risk of future flooding. People living in low-lying areas near rivers are advised to continue to be prepared for possible emergency situations.

Press Statement on Current Mekong Flood Situation

On Friday, 15 August 08 water levels receded in Luang Prabang and receded slightly in Vientiane. They are predicted to fall significantly over the weekend at these stations, although as the flood waters move south it is likely that water levels will reach at least alarm stage in southern Lao PDR, Cambodia and Viet Nam later in the coming week.

Mekong Water Utilisation Programme Ends and hands over results

Even as the long-running Water Utilisation Programme of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) was formally declared closed, the member countries and Secretariat of the MRC pledged to build further on its results in establishing integrated water resource management in the Lower Mekong Basin.
