MRC’s 2nd Regional Stakeholder Forum on Pak Beng Hydropower Project addresses stakeholder concerns

5 May 2017, Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR – About 200 participants of various stakeholder groups gathered in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR for the Mekong River Commission’s (MRC) 2nd Regional Stakeholder Forum of the proposed Pak Beng Hydropower Project.

Mekong and Mississippi River Commissions further collaborate in exchanging water management experiences

Members of the Mekong River Commission Council spent five days in the Lower Mississippi Valley in the United States beginning April 2, 2017 arriving in Memphis, Tennessee and travelled to numerous locations in the region as the guests of the Mississippi River Commission. The group included leaders from member-country Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment including: Laos Minister Sommad Pholsena, Thailand Minister General Surasak Karnjanara and Viet Nam Minister Dr. Tran Hong Ha.

Consultation on Pak Beng hydropower project continued

On 4 April 2017, representatives from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam gathered in Oudomxay province for the second Meeting of the Joint Committee Working Group (JCWG) on the Procedures for Notification, Prior Consultation and Agreement (PNPCA) for the Pak Beng hydropower project. At the meeting, the participants discussed the First Draft Technical Review Report of the Pak Beng Hydropower Project by the Mekong River Committee Secretariat (MRCS) experts. In addition, Cambodia and Thailand shared views from their first round of National Information Sharing/Consultation Meetings.

The Council Study 8th Regional Technical Working Group Meeting

The Mekong River Commission Secretariat and the member countries are organizing the Council Study 8th Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) Meeting on 27-28 Mar 2017 at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. About 40 participants who coming from MRC secretariat including the MRC technical specialist, international and regional experts, senior technical officers from the member countries’ NMCs and line agencies, development partners participate in the Meeting.

Share, listen and act for sustainable development of the Mekong river

On 22 and 23 February 2017, more than 180 representatives from different interest groups gathered at the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Regional Stakeholder Forum to discuss progress and provide views on two important works: the Study on the Sustainable Development and Management of the Mekong River including impacts by mainstream hydropower projects, or Council Study, and the proposed Pak Beng Hydropower Project. Lao Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sommad Pholsena[https://www.un.int/lao/statements_speeches/statement-he-mr-sommad-pholsena-minister-natural-resources-and-environment-lao] and Mekong River Commission CEO Pham Tuan Phan delivered keynote speeches at the Forum. Participants included MRC member country governments, development partners, NGOs, research institutes, media, and private developers of the proposed Pak Beng Project and the Xayaburi Hydropower Project.

The Government of the Netherlands continues its support to Mekong River Commission

Mekong and Mississippi River Commissions strengthen its partnership

A high level delegation from the Mississippi River Commission led by its President, Maj. Gen. Michael C. Wehr, will visit the Mekong River Commission and its Member Countries of Lao PRD, Thailand and Viet Nam from 16 January to 22 January 2017.  The Mississippi River Commission visited Cambodia in 2013.
