MEKONG Song Competition

BACKGROUND
The MRC is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2025, marking three decades of regional cooperation in sustainable water management and transboundary governance. As part of the commemorative activities, the MRC is organising a song competition to engage the public, especially youth and musicians, in celebrating the Mekong River’s significance. The competition aims to inspire creativity, raise awareness of water sustainability, and foster a sense of shared responsibility among the Mekong countries.

OBJECTIVES

  • To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the MRC with a unifying artistic expression.
  • To raise awareness about the importance of the Mekong River in regional cooperation and sustaining livelihoods.
  • To engage the wider public, especially young people, artists and local communities in MRC’s mission and activities.
  • To strengthen public understanding of MRC’s efforts in transboundary water governance and environmental sustainability.

THEME AND GUIDELINES

Theme: “Mekong: Our Shared River, Our Common Future.”

Guidelines:

  • The song should highlight the cultural, economic, and environmental significance of the Mekong River.
  • Lyrics should be in a Mekong regional language (Khmer, Lao, Thai, Vietnamese) or English.
  • The song should be original, and unpublished. Plagiarism or use of copyrighted material is not allowed.
  • The submission must be a completed song with full musical composition, between 3 to 4 minutes long (instrumental beat or melody).
  • Participants can submit solo or group (up to 3 members) entries.
  • The song should convey positive messages of unity, sustainability, and cooperation.

ELIGIBILITY AND SUBMISSION

  • Open for singer-songwriters, age 18-30, from the four MRC Member Countries (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam).
  • Entries must be submitted in digital format (MP3 or WAV), accompanied by lyrics and a short description explaining why the song meets the competition’s criteria.

SELECTION AND JUDGING CRITERIA

  • Originality and creativity (30%)
  • Relevance to the theme (25%)
  • Clarity and impact of message (20%)
  • Musicality and arrangement (15%)
  • Overall production quality (10%)

AWARDS

  • First Prize: USD 3,000
  • Second Prize: USD 1,500
  • Third Prize: USD 1,000

All three awardees (or winning teams) will be invited to perform at the MRC 30th Anniversary during the Mekong Day event on 4 April 2025.

Note: The MRC Secretariat will cover air tickets and daily subsistence allowance for the winning teams. (Up to 3 people per team)

DEADLINE

All interested contestants are invited to submit their entries by 23 March 2025.
