The MRC is an intergovernmental organisation for regional dialogue and cooperation in the Lower Mekong River Basin, established in 1995 based on the Mekong Agreement between Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. The organisation serves as a regional platform for water diplomacy and a knowledge hub of water resources management for the sustainable development of the region.

The MRC supports a basin-wide planning process based on principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). We provide a wide array of technical assistance, strategic advice, and innovative knowledge and solutions to help the lower Mekong countries promote fisheries’ sustainability, opportunities for agriculture, freedom of navigation, sustainable hydropower, flood and drought management and preservation of important ecosystems.

Media Advisory: Twenty-second Meeting of the MRC Council

Every year, water and environment ministers of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam convene to review and come to mutual conclusion on the management and development of water and related resources of the Lower Mekong Basin within the framework of the 1995 Mekong Agreement.

At the upcoming Meeting, to be held on 13 January 2016 from 10:20 am at The Intercontinental Hotel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia the MRC Council will discuss management and financial matters, internal rules governing the MRC governing bodies, updated MRC IWRM-based Basin Development Strategy and MRC Strategic Plan for 2016-2020, MRC reform, and the progress to the study on sustainable management and development of the Mekong River including impacts by mainstream hydropower projects.

Interested members of the media are requested to inform the MRC Secretariat to attend the opening and photo opportunities.
