The Mekong River Commission has opened registration for another milestone public forum, which will be highlighted by eagerly anticipated updates on topics such as the “Joint Study” between the MRC and northern neighbours, China and Myanmar, the “State of the Basin Report 2023,” and various hydropower projects.

Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, 29 June 2023 — The Lao government welcomed a Mekong River Commission delegation last week to showcase the development progress of its third Mekong mainstream hydropower project. While senior officials and experts from the MRC Member Countries and Secretariat expressed appreciation, they urged the Lao government and the developer of the Luang Prabang dam to officially share the project data and information with their fellow governments and the public more broadly.

In his second State of the Mekong Address, the top executive of the Mekong River Commission today described how – despite meaningful progress to better protect Southeast Asia’s largest river – it faces “alarming” trends in five critical areas: water flow regime, nourishing sediment, salinity intrusion, plastics pollution, and climate change-driven flood and drought.
