Senior officials from the six Mekong countries on Sunday endorsed recommendations of the first phase of the Joint Study between the Mekong River Commission and Mekong Lancang Cooperation to pave the way for better information sharing about reservoir operations on the Mekong’s water flow, and water release as well as practical solutions to mitigate and adapt to impacts.

Preparations are underway in Hawaii and California for next week’s arrival of a high-level Mekong River Commission (MRC-Mekong) delegation, which heads to the United States as part of the annual Sister Rivers Partnership Exchange program. Sponsored by the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the MRC-Mekong delegates are scheduled to meet with the Mississippi River Commission (MRC-USA) to exchange best practices on water and river management. The two commissions will be joined by a third water commission, the International Water Boundary Commission (IBWC) to learn about how the U.S. and Mexico cooperate on transboundary issues on their shared rivers.

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) has launched a Channel on Mekong Flood and Drought Forecast, aimed at improving public awareness and understanding of Mekong River conditions in the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMB). Starting from July 2023, the Channel provides regular updates on current water levels, flows, and forecasted flood and drought risks for people living along the Mekong River, broadcasting in English with subtitles in Mekong languages. It runs every Monday during this rainy season on the MRC Secretariat's social media channels of Facebook and YouTube.

The Mekong River Commission has opened registration for another milestone public forum, which will be highlighted by eagerly anticipated updates on topics such as the “Joint Study” between the MRC and northern neighbours, China and Myanmar, the “State of the Basin Report 2023,” and various hydropower projects.

Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, 29 June 2023 — The Lao government welcomed a Mekong River Commission delegation last week to showcase the development progress of its third Mekong mainstream hydropower project. While senior officials and experts from the MRC Member Countries and Secretariat expressed appreciation, they urged the Lao government and the developer of the Luang Prabang dam to officially share the project data and information with their fellow governments and the public more broadly.

In his second State of the Mekong Address, the top executive of the Mekong River Commission today described how – despite meaningful progress to better protect Southeast Asia’s largest river – it faces “alarming” trends in five critical areas: water flow regime, nourishing sediment, salinity intrusion, plastics pollution, and climate change-driven flood and drought.
