11th MRC Regional Stakeholder Forum Delivers Recommendations for Responsible Hydropower Management, Prior Consultation Process

Mekong governments, developers and operators were urged to share information and data on hydropower operation to improve cascade dam management, according to the first-ever public forum organized on this critical issue by the Mekong River Commission (MRC). Stakeholders also specifically discussed the most recent assessments of potential transboundary impacts from the Sanakham dam Lao PDR had proposed to build on the mainstream of the Mekong River.
MRC Council of Ministers Approves Crucial Sustainable Hydropower Development Strategy, Appoints New CEO

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) Council yesterday approved the highly anticipated Sustainable Hydropower Development Strategy (SHDS 2021) for the Lower Mekong Basin, one of the key deliverables of the previous Basin Development Strategy and the MRC Strategic Plan 2016–2020, to address the future sustainability of hydropower developments.

Germany is allocating a further EUR 1.45 million to the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to tackle development and management challenges in the Lower Mekong Basin. The extra funding will bolster technical cooperation in implementing the MRC Strategic Plan 2021–2025 and is in addition to Germany’s contribution of EUR 3 million first announced in June 2021.

Two reports released today by the Mekong River Commission (MRC) reveal that fishing continues to be a vital livelihood in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam. But overfishing and habitat degradation caused by rapid population growth, infrastructure development and climate change are stressing the Lower Mekong Basin’s fisheries while changes in the Basin’s aquatic ecosystems are impacting social conditions.
