This report is based on water quality data obtained from the MRC Water Quality Monitoring Network (WQMN). The WQMN is one of the MRC’s Core River Basin Management Functions and is actively being implemented by the MRC Member Countries. As such, the preparation of this report would not have been possible without the continued support of the MRC Member Countries, specifically, the national water quality laboratories of the Member Countries and the National Mekong Committee Secretariats.

Thousands of dams have been built in the Mekong Basin, mainly for irrigation, water supply, and/or hydropower, with many more projects planned. Dams obstruct watercourses, alter flow patterns, and change aquatic environments, which can cause various negative impacts on fisheries and the millions of people who depend upon them. This report summarises the main impacts of dams and some approaches to mitigating negative impacts on fisheries.

Lee Trap Fishery Monitoring in Southern Laos Reveals Fishery Resources Degradation from 2008 to 2013

This short management series report presents findings from the Lee Trap Fishery Monitoring Programme in Southern Lao PDR between 2008 and 2013, the programme aiming to track the abundance and diversity of migratory white fish in the Lower Mekong River, and to provide valuable information on fisheries resources for fisheries management. The report concludes that fishery resources in southern Lao PDR is degraded in some extent and calls for more research and deeper analysis to prove the results.

Promotional Report on Identified Joint Projects in the Lower Mekong Basin 2016-2020

Approved in 2017, this promotional report was developed based on the National Indicative Plans 2016-2020 of the four Member Countries and the MRC IWRM-based Basin Development Strategy 2016-2020. It describes five prioritised joint projects identified by the Member Countries. The joint project involves two or more countries to work together on key basin-wide challenges that one country cannot address alone. This report is used to promote the joint projects for funding and implementation support among development partners with experience of such projects.

Mekong Sediment from the Mekong River Commission Study

This technical note presents the results of modelling changes in sediment loads in the Mekong basin by employing water resource modelling to support the impact assessment, which is part of the study. The results discussed here indicate that existing and proposed dams in the Mekong basin are expected cumulatively to have significant impacts on sediment loads entering the Mekong delta.

Water loss from LMB reservoirs Technical note 1  

Water loss from reservoir development in the Lower Mekong Basin

This short technical note describes the effect of reservoir development in the Lower Mekong Basin on water loss derived from evaporation and seepage. Findings translate that the water loss in Cambodia and Lao PDR increases in proportion to the number of proposed reservoirs in 2020 and 2040. Additionally, seepage is a dominant factor of the water loss as evaporation could be compensated by rainfall. Finally, the water loss is considered insignificant when comparing to inflow to the reservoirs.

The Study on the Sustainable Development and Management of the Mekong River Basin, including Impacts by Mainstream Hydropower Projects

The ‘Council Study’ was conducted by the MRC from 2012 to 2017. It aims to provide an objective scientific assessment of the environmental, social and economic costs and benefits of existing and planned water resource developments in the Lower Mekong Basin to inform decision makers. The study results will be integrated into the MRC knowledge base to enhance the Basin Development Planning process. It helps promote capacity and ensure technology transfer to the Member Countries.

This technical report describes priority issues for the management of water resources in the Sesan and Srepok River Basins along the borders of Cambodia and Viet Nam. Among key issues identified are insufficient monitoring and assessment of water flow, lack of flood forecasting and warning mechanisms, and limited mitigation measures to address the impacts of hydro-infrastructural development. This is a joint paper produced by the two countries under the Mekong Integrated Water Resources Management Project.
