Symposium on Hydro-Meteorological Networks "THE VALUE OF HYDRO-METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS"

Distinguished Participants

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The 2-day Symposium on the Hydro-Meteorological Networks "THE VALUE OF HYDRO-METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS" is now drawing to an end of its proceedings, I would like to thank you all for your active participation and valuable contribution made during these days. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the symposium organizers including MRCS and CNMC staffs for their jointly excellent arrangements led the Symposium to its successful conclusion.

I am very pleased with the success of this Symposium. We were delighted and honored at the opening session with the presence of (H.E Mr. Sin Niny), Permanence Vice-Chairman of the Cambodia National Mekong Committee and H.E Mr. Christian CONNAN, French Ambassador to Cambodia followed by the attractive and impressive plenary sessions . The high level of the international exchanges on “the value of hydro-meteorological observations” and importance of near real time hydro-met data of the Mekong-HYCOS project under MRC cooperation framework were highlighted.

The symposium on hydro-meteorological networks, convened by the Mekong River Commission (MRC), aiming at reviewing the past work and exploring current needs in the region for accurate and readily- available hydro-meteorological data, which has been used by the MRC Member Countries, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam, for flood forecasting and warnings, inputs to modeling and improving the understanding of the dynamics of the river as well as other purposes such as navigation and fisheries.

The symposium brought together ‘water people’ from all backgrounds and stakeholders from such diverse sectors as hydropower, environmental sciences, irrigation and agriculture to disaster management. It provided the countries, national, regional and international specialists with a built network and opportunities to share profound insights on the importance of this real-time data and to strengthen future cooperation on regional data sharing, benefiting the sustainable development of the Mekong River Basin.

My final sincere thanks are due to AFD and FFEM as development partner for their financial support for the implementation of the Mekong-HYCOS Project, one of the most important foundation activities of the MRC.

With the congratulation for the success of the Symposium and for the commitment for the continuous improvement of the Mekong Hydro-meteorological network as an essential contribution to achieving the economically prosperous, socially just and environmentally sound Mekong River Basin I wish you all for the safe journey back home , I would now like to declare the Symposium on Hydro-meteorological Network under the theme "The Value of Hydro-meteorological Observation" closed.

Thank you.

So, thanks to everybody and, please, have a safe journey return back home.
