The Government of the Netherlands continues its support to Mekong River Commission

*Vientiane, Lao PDR, 23 January 2017* – The Government of the Netherlands has granted USD 2.17 million to the Mekong River Commission in support of its MRC Strategic Plan for 2016-2020 including the Flood Management and Mitigation Initial Studies.

Mekong and Mississippi River Commissions strengthen its partnership

A high level delegation from the Mississippi River Commission led by its President, Maj. Gen. Michael C. Wehr, will visit the Mekong River Commission and its Member Countries of Lao PRD, Thailand and Viet Nam from 16 January to 22 January 2017.  The Mississippi River Commission visited Cambodia in 2013.

Official Prior Consultation Process of the Pak Beng hydropower project kicked off

On 12 January 2017, representatives from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam gathered at Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat (MRCS) in Vientiane to start the first meeting of the Joint Committee Working Group (JCWG) on the Procedures for Notification, Prior Consultation and Agreement (PNPCA) for the Pak Beng hydropower project.

The 23rd MRC Council Meeting approves one Secretariat Office relocation plan

*Pakse, Lao PDR, 24 November 2016* – The Secretariat Office of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) will be merged into one in Vientiane, Lao PDR, within the next two months, while the MRC Regional Flood Management and Mitigation Centre (RFMMC) will remain in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to continue to provide regional flood forecasting service, according to a detailed roadmap approved by the MRC Council at the 23rd Annual Meeting on 23rd - 24th November 2016 in Pakse, Champasak province.

China’s emergency water supply increased Mekong’s water level, says an MRC-China joint study

*Vientiane, Lao PDR, 14 November 2016* – The emergency water release from China’s cascade dams during the last dry season increased the Mekong River’s water level and helped alleviate the severe drought the Mekong Basin suffered this year, according to a newly published study by the Mekong River Commission and China.
