China notified about discharge of Jinghong Reservoir 5 days in advance

4 April 2018, Vientiane, Lao PDR – Today, MRC received a Notification of hydrological information on Lancang River from China – its dialogue partner – about its planned water discharge from the Jinghong Reservoir to the lower Mekong River from 9 to 17 April 2018, aimed to ensure power grid security. It is also to support the traditional activities Dai ethnic minority in China on the Lancang River during their water Splashing Festival.

Siem Reap, Cambodia, 3 April 2018 — A two-day international conference convened by the Mekong River Commission (MRC) comes to a close today. In one of the largest gatherings ever convened by the MRC, the meeting welcomed about 400 stakeholders from Mekong country governments, non-governmental organisations, academia, the private sector, and other river basin organisations. They collectively made many recommendations for enhancing joint efforts and partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the region.

Vientiane, Lao PDR, 29 March 2018 — Next week, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) will convene the 3rd MRC Summit in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This capstone event will bring together the four Prime Ministers of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Viet Nam, and high-level representatives from China and Myanmar, the MRC’s dialogue partners.

Lively discussion on the findings and results of the Council Study in Vietnam

On 13 March 2018, a briefing on results of the Study on Sustainable Management and Development of the Mekong River Including the Impact of the Hydropower Development Projects - known as the ‘Council Study’ ,was organised in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam by Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) through Vietnam National Mekong Committee (VNMC) and Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS). Deputy Minister Tran Quy Kien participated and chaired the meeting together with Director General of the VNMC Le Duc Trung and MRC CEO Pham Tuan Phan.

Findings from the Council Study reported to high level officials from Cambodia

Reporting Findings and Results from the Council Study to Member Countries

The Study on the Sustainable Development and Management of the Mekong River, including impacts by mainstream hydropower projects – known as the ‘Council Study’ was conducted by the Mekong River Commission (MRC) from 2012 to 2017. Following a number of technical consultations at the regional and national levels, as well as stakeholder feedback at open forums, the final report is being refined for publishing in mid-February 2018.
