Germany renews its support to Mekong cooperation

The Federal Republic of Germany renewed its support to Mekong Cooperation through the Mekong River Commission today, with a new strategic framework on issues surrounding organisational transition towards decentralization of its core functions, pro-poor oriented sustainable hydropower development and transboundary climate change adaptation. The framework for the cooperation between the MRC and the Federal Republic of Germany addresses key challenges and opportunities for the Mekong River Basin and the future of the MRC’s organisational structure.

Luxembourg supports Mekong climate change adaptation strategies

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg granted USD 2.6 million to the Mekong River Commission (MRC)’s Climate Change Adaptation Initiative to assist Mekong countries with climate change adaptation planning at a basin-wide level today. The grant is the first time Luxembourg has provided support to the MRC and represents a milestone in climate change adaptation planning for the Mekong region.

Mekong Countries supported on emerging environmental issues and climate risks

Results of Strategic Environmental Assessment of Hydropower on the Mekong Mainstream Released

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) today released the draft final report of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for hydropower development projects proposed on the mainstream Mekong River. In response to a high level of interest to construct up to twelve mainstream hydropower projects in Cambodia, Lao PDR and on the Lao-Thai border, the SEA weighs the proposed projects' opportunities against the risks.
