Floods and New Initiatives on MRC Agenda

Recent flooding and accelerating infrastructure development on the Mekong River were high on the agenda of discussions between the Member States of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) in Vientiane today. New initiatives, including the upcoming Regional Multi-Stakeholder Consultation of the MRC Hydropower Programme, Environmental Considerations for Sustainable Hydropower Development, and a new Drought Management Programme, were also deliberated at the 27th Meeting of the MRC Joint Committee.

Lower Mekong Basin Flood Update

Although water levels along the Mekong River above Phnom Penh have continued to decline since their peak so far in 2008, around August 17, when loss of life and damage to property were recorded in the Lao PDR and Thailand, many parts of the Lower Mekong Basin remain at risk of future flooding. People living in low-lying areas near rivers are advised to continue to be prepared for possible emergency situations.

Press Statement on Current Mekong Flood Situation

On Friday, 15 August 08 water levels receded in Luang Prabang and receded slightly in Vientiane. They are predicted to fall significantly over the weekend at these stations, although as the flood waters move south it is likely that water levels will reach at least alarm stage in southern Lao PDR, Cambodia and Viet Nam later in the coming week.
