Vientiane, Lao PDR, 3rd Oct 2017
For more than 20 years, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) has been supporting its member countries – Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam – to jointly develop and manage the Lower Mekong Basin sustainably. The intergovernmental river basin organization was established though the 1995 Mekong Agreement, when the four signatory countries agreed to cooperate in developing, managing, using and conserving water resources in areas such as fisheries, flood control, irrigation, hydropower, and navigation.
The MRC acts as a platform for water diplomacy and regional cooperation in which member countries share the benefits of common water resources despite different national interests, and address transboundary pressures in the basin. It also serves as a knowledge hub that promotes regional cooperation and policy-making based on scientific evidence. The MRC provides technical assistance and develops practical tools to help its member countries make informed decisions about their development.
Two summits of MRC Heads of Governments took place – the first in 2010 hosted by Thailand in Hua Hin and the second in 2014 hosted by Viet Nam in Ho Chi Minh City. The 3rd Summit will be held in 2018 and scheduled to be hosted by Cambodia. The theme for the 3rd Summit is around enhancing cooperation and partnerships.
The contest is open to anyone regardless of age, country of origin, etc. Employees and immediate family members of the MRC and its member countries’ national Mekong committees are not eligible to enter the contest.
