MRC No.08/04
Vientiane, 28 June 2004
The Mekong River Commission Secretariat has relocated to Vientiane, Lao PDR and the new headquarters will officially open for business on July 1.
The Secretariat, which has spent the past five years based in Phnom Penh, has moved into a new, purpose-built building on the Mekong riverbank on Fa Ngum Rd.
The new headquarters has been donated by the Lao Government and was officially handed over to the MRCS on April 5, 2004.
Nearly 80 professional and support staff have relocated from Phnom Penh and will now join the 20 new Lao employees who spent two months training with their counterparts in Cambodia before returning to take up their posts in Vientiane.
Over the coming months the MRCS will employ more regional and local staff to bring its total workforce up to around 120-130 people.
MRC Officer in Charge Dr Dao Trong Tu said the Secretariat had undergone a successful move and employees were looking forward to living and working in Vientiane.
The Mekong River Commission Secretariat works on behalf of the Mekong River Commission as a technical and advisory body, supporting the work of the MRC’s core and sector programmes through extensive research and planning operations as well as the dissemination of data.
The Mekong River Commission was formed in 1995 through an agreement by the four member countries of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam.
